Serenity vs. Shakespeare

Maybe you thought I was exaggerating when I recommended the movie Serenity. Maybe you thought I didn’t mean it. Maybe you thought I was just full of hype.

Well, Orson Scott Card, the acclaimed science fiction author of Ender’s Game has compared Serenity‘s writer and director Joss Whedon to Shakespeare.

Shakespeare.

And you thought comparing it to Star Wars was a bit much. I don’t know if I’d make the Shakespeare claim myself. I think Card is more making the claim that Serenity has both deeper meanings and common fun, much like Shakespeare. I’d agree with that.

Just go see the movie already. (link via Inessentials)

  1. Yeah, I’d guess he’s making the comparison in that they have lighthearted things and serious things, all at once. Otherwise that’d be a bit much, and from what I know of him, what he thinks, and his writing, that wouldn’t sound like him.

I heard him talk on what makes a good story, and he’s big on stories that hit you the first, second, and hundredth time you read them. There needs to be stuff above and below for them to be great, and I’d agree with this 100%, and say it is a similarity between the two.

And I’ll be seeing the movie this weekend with Jessica, woo! We’re both uber excited.
