Milo’s Hair…Tonight’s Adventure: Braids & Beads
Milo’s hair is getting pretty long. It’s probably about 3 inches or more when stretched straight. Tonight I put in 12 braids (just the front 2/3 of his hair) and finished each braid with 2 beads.
The parts in his hair are not pretty, but braiding hair on a 15 month old is like trying to wrestle a mad octopus, so I took what I could get.
I want the braids to hang a little straighter without so much curl near his scalp and I think a few more beads will help with that but I didn’t want to try and put 5 or 6 beads on each braid only to find out none of them stayed in his hair overnight. The two beads will be our test run.
Okay, what you want…pictures. Remember it’s a work in progress.

Update: When he woke up this morning he had 14 out of the 24 beads still in his hair. I managed to find 8 of the 10 missing beads. Not sure if he ate the last 2 or if they are just in the blankets somewhere. Also, I think I had two problems keeping the beads in. 1) I didn’t use any product so his hair was super soft, making it easy for the beads to slip and 2) I think I was using really crappy elastics that I couldn’t get tight enough.

okay, now THAT is stinkin’ cute.
I have two really good friends who have black children. One mom is black, and the other is white. The mom who is black came into braiding by birth. She lays her babies across her lap, pins ‘em down with her elbow, and braids away. It always fascinates me to watch her! She has 5 girls, and I got to watch the last 3 from babyhood on. (the youngest is the same age as Angela.) By the time her babies are 2 1/2 or so, they no longer cry. They just sit there, resigned to their fate. When it’s done, they have hair that can be left alone for a month.
It’s a fascinating process!
The mom who is white has 4 children who are black, three of them are girls. She took classes on how to braid black hair. (not sure where she took them, but I can find out. She’s my next door neighbor.) Now that her kids are older she takes them to a woman who does it about once a month.
I know that BOTH moms use lots of goop in the hair to get the parts nice and neat, and special videos that the kids only get to watch when they’re getting their hair braided so it’s special. (I haven’t seen that it helps much with babies/toddlers! LOL) I love the smell of the goop…very coconutty.
Leah – the “goop” is probably straight up coconut oil. It’s really good for the hair and skin. I’ve just started with Milo’s hair. I’ve contemplated taking him somewhere but this is something that I want to figure out on my own (with a little guidance). I think we’re going to save having it done professionally for very special occasions.
Love the pictures and great job! One thing I do is put on a hair net on my daughter’s hair so the style stays neater and longer. It really does help. I also bought a tub of black rubber bands at my local Sally store and I only use them versus the cheap ones you can buy at Target/Walmart, etc. The black ones work really well and stay in until I cut them out. I haven’t tried beads too much as I haven’t found an easy way to get them into my daughter’s hair. What do you use?
