Where Did You Learn To Write?
Where do people learn to write? I know it’s not in highschool or college, because I graduated from both of those and think I did pretty well. But, my writing has not improved. I’ll read blogs people have written or a review or article Kevin has written and think, “wow, that’s really well written. I wonder what made them think to use the word _____ (fill in impressive sounding word here)?” or “That was really interesting, funny, enlightening, (other words for not boring go here), etc.” Then, I get an idea for a blog post, or some other form of writing. In my head it sounds great. Clever, witty, interesting. Then I start typing. And the tone is wrong, my ideas aren’t coming across on paper (computer screen) like they were in my head. I’ll sit and try and rework it, but it’s never ends up being quite what I had in mind.
I have less than 6 months to finish my thesis, so if you could tell me where you learned to write, that would be really helpful. Thanks.
Disclaimer: I’m not a writer.
Whenever I write something, I’m not thinking about writing. I’m actually standing on a little proscenium stage in my brain with a spotlight on me and an audience of all my friends and loved ones out in the seats.
Then I just start talking, and I write down whatever I say.
I guess that’s a long-winded way of saying that if you can say it, you can write it. So step back one level and try to say it.
