Apparently Jerry Falwell gave a sermon entitled “The Myth of Global Warming” and then backed up the sermon by saying God will take care of any environmental problems we have:

Falwell said the Bible teaches that God will maintain the Earth until Jesus returns, so Christians should be responsible environmentalists, but not what he calls … quote … “first-class nuts.”

Dr. Falwell, the feeling is mutual.

I don’t think the Bible says God will take care of the planet–I think he asked us to do that.

And it doesn’t seem unreasonable to make some simple efforts to take care of God’s creation. Cleaning up after ourselves, leaving things better than we found them. It’s what kids learn in preschool.

Of course Falwell and folks like him are concerned we’ll care more about trees than people. And that’s where money and power go. But caring about the planet is caring about people–we do have to live here.

It reminds me of another right wing organization that didn’t understand the concept of carrying capacity. And blacklisted me for it.
