Vimeo vs. YouTube
March 13th, 2007 Posted in InternetI realized I switched from Vimeo to YouTube for no reason. OK, YouTube is now backed by Google and has the advantage of a massive audience. That’s tempting. But Vimeo has really nice design. Which do you like better?
Let’s compare. Lexi Combs Her Hair, Vimeo vs. YouTube:
(Keep in mind that the aspect ratios are different. I forced them both to be the same height–187 pixels–but Vimeo has a width of 250 vs. YouTube’s 227.)

I think Vimeo is slightly higher quality and has better design overall, like you said. Unfortunately, that’s not all that counts.
If you’re going for a big audience, hoping millions will see your videos (or even thousands), then YouTube wins hands down. If you don’t care how many see them, Vimeo may win, except that it would be easier for Vimeo to just up and disappear one day than it would be for YouTube, and if it disappeared, so would your videos.
Overall, I think it’s YouTube FTW.

If you’re just using one service or the other solely to embed videos to play on your blog, I don’t think it would matter so much what you use. Otherwise, I agree with the points JL! made.
Oh, and Lexi is adorable.

I came across this old post when searching for vimeo vs youtube via google… which I’m still undecided on. For the record, Vimeo is now supporting HD vids so that’s a huge plus in my book.
