SpongeBob: Who would you rather go bowling with?

January 21st, 2005 Posted in Politics

“Let me ask you, who would you rather go bowling with, SpongeBob and his friends or the Rev. James Dobson? Who would you rather go out with and have a few beers? Probably the only common ground I have with the Rev. James Dobson is that I haven’t seen the video, and I’ll bet he hasn’t either.”

-Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants, responding to accusations of a pro-homosexual agenda.

And the flurry continues…

The makers of SpongeBob claim the problem is not with the video (which you can watch here), but the organization behind it. The organization, the We Are Family Foundation, claims they’re being confused with another group of the same name.

I keep waiting for a more detailed statement from James Dobson clarifying his stand since it seems so ludicrious to out a single character with a minor role in a video starring dozens of other potentially pro-homosexual characters. I’m also eager for Christianity Today’s weblog to weigh in.

“Server has reached its capacity and can serve no more streams. Please try again later.”

    Dobson-dotted?

Apparently James Dobson now has the power to bring down websites, a power previously only known to SlashDot.

    Be afraid. Be very afraid…

The founder of WAFF obviously doesn’t know what is on his own site. There is a total of at least SEVEN references to homosexuality, sexual orientation, and/or sexual identity on his site and most are part of lesson plans from their previous educational campaigns geared towards school-aged children.

See the post on my own website for details on where each of these items occur on the WAFF website:

THIS is why Christian Conservatives and others are so up in arms about this.

.. and I HAVE seen the video and it makes at least 2 direct references specifically to the Foundation and its logo, including a clip from the character “Mouse” from PBS’s “Between the Lions” who has apparently found the Foundation’s website on his computer. (I also love SpongeBob but would rather bowl with Dobsom — I thin SpongeBob wouldn’t be able to stay focused enough for an entire game — Squidward and Krusty seem more of the bowling types)
