Jon Stewart on Jesus

January 20th, 2005 Posted in Politics

“It’s hard for me to believe that Jesus’ first priorities would have been a capital gains tax cut and the occupation of Iraq.”

-Sojourner’s Jim Wallis on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (you can watch a clip of the show online for a limited time) talking about his new book, God’s Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn’t Get It.

This is such an interesting topic. Obviously Jesus would never have taken a governmental office. But then does that mean a Christian, in their efforts to be like Jesus, can never take office? Or that if they do, they should strive to not emulate Jesus? It seems like the person, when acting on their own behalf, should emulate Him, but when acting as the government, they cannot, since Jesus was not and is not Government.
