Kyle,
How I got to this "monkey" is beyond me. I've attended Sonshine for 20+ years. Why you don't change your pants once in a while to see the knot you have twisted in your underwear may be the eighth wonder of the world. Ninth would be why people listen(ed) to Petra. Yish.
I remember owning a Petra cassette tape. I bought it and tried to listen to it because I wanted to enjoy Christian Rock. CCM n the 80's - YUCKY.
Thank God for the 90's. When Christian music said - "Oh, you mean we don't have to make attempts at big hair, make nonsense music and copy cat the crack pots from the secular mainstream?"
I'm not sure who to credit for the metamorphis or 180 of CCM - but thanks.

To Kevin: Do you really know about concerts? To all of your criteeeeeking: I agree, I disagree, oooh that was aimed a little low - Jars, yeah I agreezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Ooops sorry. Fell asleep thinking back to that one.

Steve is right. Grace.

Whoa! As someone who's been following Kevin's blog for a little while now, I think it's fair to say that his Sonshine assessment was "mild" compared to other rants he's had in the past. Which I think shows signs of maturity, honestly. He's not getting his undies in bunch over trivial things like festival antics and silly rock bands. So let's give Kevin a little bit of credit and lay off him, for pity's sake. This is his blog. I read it because I like to read what he thinks about things -- even if I disagree with what he says or how he says it. And nothing in his responses tells me that he's shirking any so-called "responsibility" here. Sheesh about it! Here's a suggestion: Show a little more grace, next time, Kyle. Lord knows we all could use a little more grace ...

by the way, I think we both need to get a life and quit anonymous internet arguments....talk about "mature responsibility"

I hope we've both learned our lesson.

I believe that in a public domain such as this, you have a right to be honest, as we both have been, but you must also take responsibilty for what's being said. Responsibilty means considering your words and their consequences. I'm not talking about using unbiased sugar-coated christianese words, I'm talking about MATURE RESPONSIBILTY about for words. However "personal" you feel this arena is, you have to realize that these are your (and my) words speaking one-on-one with every single person that reads this. Please don't take that lightly.

Your flippant irresponsibilty has alienated me....please don't pass that on to your youth.

Thanks for coming back and explaining yourself, Kyle. I don't usually like to jump on commenters like that (it's not very encouraging for the other potential-commenters out there), but you set yourself up so nicely I couldn't resist.

I understand what you're saying, and quite frankly I disagree. This is my personal blog where I rant about what I think. That seems like a perfectly legitamate place to say some honest things about some Christian bands. Too often Christians sugar-coat things for fear of hurting someone's feelings, and I think that's a bunch of bunk. Every one of these bands is performing in the public square, and is therefore open to criticism (just as I am blogging in the public Internet, and am open to criticism). If you can't take a few softball complaints, get out of the public square.

My blog isn't a professional magazine, it's not an official review, it's not a place where I'm obligated to be unbiased and always constructive. If I was writing a concert review for CCM, yes you're right, I probably should have given a bit more constructive criticism. But I'm just talking about my weekend trip. I liked it... I didn't like it... end of story.

That's why I posted this entry here and not on the Monkey Outta Nowhere main page where I try to have more of a professional approach.

I do apololgize for my previous malicious comment, so please allow me to specify that which grieves me most.

I do understand that your intended honest tone may be lighter than I am "hearing" through your blog. I also understand that this is simply you expressing your personal opinions on this subject. But PLEASE understand that since this is the World Wide Web, your personal, loose comments are available for everyone to read, and what you intended as an honest personal opinion can translate to a personal offense once read by the party of the subject.

Please reread some of the below comments that I took from your post and imagine they are being said about your personal performance of whatever career it is in which you provide for you and your family.....

"It was a decent.... show, though nothing amazing....."
"I can't think of anything more lame...."
"They were decent, but not cool enough to overcome the body slamming directly in front of me..... "
"They're not going to be a mainstream crossover success, but they'll make decent rock for the Christian kids....."
"(superchick's) live shows have been lacking, and from our vantage inside the tent this show was no different....."
"The dinosaurs of Christian rock...."
"Part of the disappointment is the complete cheese...."
"A grey-bearded guitar player is definitely a bad sign....."
"(Petra's) return to their rock roots made for a lame sound....."
"(Petra)....gave a 20 minute altar call, which seemed completely excessive and unnecessary......"
"I didn't actually watch (Jars of Clay) since I've seen enough of their live show to not be impressed......"

"I ended up grabbing a Violet Burning CD (at full price, despite the lead singer saying you could pay whatever you could afford and feel free to burn a copy for your friends)"
-Kevin, please feel proud that you paid full price. These guys' CD and merch sales determine whether or not he and his bandmates will be able to buy gas and a meal on the way home, not to mention the hope that they can provide some food and pay bills for their families at home.

Kevin, what if someone reviewed your personal job performance using such unspecific terms as "lame" or "decent" without providing any constructive comments on which to build a better performance?

I don't mean to come as an offense towards you. I'm simply imploring you to be more responsible for what's being said for the entire world to read on the internet. What you say on the internet is just as powerful (or hurtful) as what is said in any media tool such as magazines, newspapers, and tv.

I'm sure you know as well as I do, we learned last summer that "with great power comes great responsibilty"

Also, James 3:6 is helpful.

Hey Kyle, next time you feel like commenting, try not to be a cynical as me -- especially if you're complaining about my cynicism. Also, let me know when you get a blog and I'll make sure to post whiny, unspecific comments for everyone's pleasure.

What is a "Christian" review? And why are you getting on my case for posting some honest reflections about a concert I went to? That's what I thought. I liked some bands, I didn't like others. Period. What do you want me to say? Everyone was great because we all love Jesus? That'd be lying. Doesn't seem like a very Christian thing to do.

Hey Kevin, next time you feel like speaking, leave your little cynical, unintelligent comments at the playground. Also, let me know when your band plays and I'll make sure and attend so that I can post a sorely written, jaded "christian" review on the internet for everyone's pleasure.

I remember listening to Sonshine from the deck of my house as a kid of no more than 8 or 9 years old. My house was a couple miles from the Willmar fairgrounds where Sonshine is held. That's probably what made me grow up loving modern Christian music. Going to those concerts had a huge influence on me.

Yep, Ace is still living up to their indie motto, "Don't stoppa rockin'!"

And I might have to take you up on that offer, Nick.
