100 Greatest Christian Songs

July 19th, 2004 Posted in Music

An interesting CD collection and book collaboration project is coming out later this year, “CCM’s Top 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music.” The project will feature four two-CD volumes of 25 songs each coming out between September 2004 and June 2005. A book of the same name will come out in October giving details and stories behind each song.

The songs were chosen by a group of journalists, industry experts, and fans, though the whole process raises all sorts of questions about what constitutes “Christian music” and how specific songs were chosen (if dc Talk’s “What If I Stumble” made the cut, how many more dc Talk songs will be on the list?). I predict a the usual complete shutout for Tooth & Nail Records and their roster of groundbreaking bands.

The songs from the first volume (the 100 songs were not ranked) include …

“Awesome God” - Rich Mullins
“Testify To Love” - Avalon
“People Get Ready Jesus Is Coming” - Crystal Lewis
“Praise the Lord” - Imperials
“Consuming Fire” - Third Day
“Lead Me On” - Amy Grant
“Where There Is Faith” - 4Him
“The Warrior is a Child” - Twila Paris
“In the Light” - Charlie Peacock
“We Are His Hands” - Whiteheart
“The Great Adventure” - Steven Curtis Chapman
“More Power To Ya” - Petra
“God of Wonders” - City on a Hill
“Say the Name” - Margaret Becker
“Place In This World” - Michael W. Smith
“Stand” - Susan Ashton
“Rise Again” - Dallas Holm
“Alive” - P.O.D.
“We Will Stand” - Russ Taff
“Heaven” - BeBe & CeCe Winans
“What If I Stumble” - dcTalk
“Stomp” - God

Don’t see any U2, Johnny Cash, Martin Luther, or Bach on the list. What a shame they’re limited to the last 6 months of record production…

Well, they are going back a good 20 years with stuff like Petra’s More Power to Ya, but yeah, they are completely ignoring anything pre-dating modern music and are completely ignoring spiritual mainstream music. Nothing CCM hasn’t done before though. ;-)

Lists like these just tick me off. I mean, who are we trying to kid. There’s no way you can take this list seriously when it only has one nod to the Imperials.

SANDI PATTY is still the best and most popular christian artist here in the Philippines. Please include her. In fact, some of the chosen songs in the first list are not familiar to us. Sandi and Wayne Watson’s Another Time, Another Place, More Than Wonderful, I’ve Just Seen Jesus, Love in Any Language, Seekers of Your Heart, In the Name of the Lord, Forever Friends, We Shall behold Him, Upon This Rock, Exalt the Name, There is a Savior,Via Dolorosa, They Could Not, Cary On, How Majestic is Your Name, Betlehem Morning and How Great Thou Art had brought her to be inducted to the Music Hall of Fame. She still reigns as the VOICE OF CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN MUSIC!
